The best time to visit Mount Rainier
Mount Rainier is open all year, but it is really two different parks: a short, brilliant summer and a long, snowy winter. Picking the right month, and the right hour, makes more difference than anything else you plan.

If you can pick only one window, choose late July to mid-September. The week after Labor Day is the local secret: kids are back in school and the weather is often at its most settled.
How early should you arrive?
There are no timed entry reservations in 2026, but Paradise parking still fills by late morning on summer weekends. Drivers should aim to be through the Nisqually Entrance by about 8 AM, which means leaving Seattle around 6 AM, or arrive after about 4 PM when the day crowds leave. Weekdays are much easier. On a tour, none of this is your problem: the group vehicle drops you at the door.
Weather: the real variable
The mountain makes its own weather. A sunny Seattle can sit under a cloud-wrapped summit, and the reverse happens too. Check the Paradise forecast the evening before; every tour on this site cancels free up to 24 hours ahead. Pack layers whatever the season: Paradise is often about 15°F (8°C) cooler than the city.

The Paradise visitor center is open 9:30 AM to 6:30 PM until 27 September and 9:30 AM to 4 PM until 12 October 2026. The Sunrise Road was closed to cars after an August wildfire, and the Ohanapecosh visitor center is closed for construction, so the Paradise side is where to go this year.
