Olympic or Mount Rainier?
Seattle sits between two of America’s great national parks. Both are spectacular, but they suit different trips. The short answer: Rainier for a day, Olympic for a few days.
The two parks side by side
| Mount Rainier | Olympic | |
|---|---|---|
| The draw | One giant glaciated volcano, meadows, waterfalls | Mountains, temperate rainforest and wild coast |
| From Seattle | ~2 h 20 min to Paradise by car | Ferry plus ~2.5 h to Hurricane Ridge; ~4 h to the Hoh |
| Highlights close together? | Yes, along one road | No, spread around a peninsula |
| Best as | A day trip | 2 to 3 days |
| Guided day tour | From $148 | From $188 |
Choose Rainier if...
You have one day. Everything on the classic route, Longmire, Christine and Narada Falls, Paradise and Reflection Lakes, sits on a single road, so a day trip feels complete. The mountain itself is the show, and on a clear day it is unforgettable. See the day-trip itinerary.

Choose Olympic if...
You have two or more days, love forests and beaches, or want variety over one big view. A guided day from Seattle can still work: the small-group Olympic tour takes the Bainbridge ferry to Hurricane Ridge and Lake Crescent in about 11 hours, with lunch included. The rainforest and the coast need an overnight on the peninsula.
Or do both
With three days in Seattle, do Rainier on the clearest day and Olympic on another. Both have guided options with pickup, so neither needs a car.
